"Fiona Fernandez is a historian at heart with a ti "Fiona Fernandez is a historian at heart with a time-traveller's soul."

I really do agree.

The one person, besides my Dad, who genuinely, really, absolutely, completely loves this city and respects its many histories and stories (her Mumbai quizzes are not for the faint-hearted).

This is a lovely book, I like the size, the heft, the gentle illustrations, the font and everything about it that reminds me why I love calling this city home.

@theumbrellabar this is gorgeous.

If we've met, you probably know about my inherited If we've met, you probably know about my inherited Sunday playlist :)
My dad loved music, and this ensured we had a pretty decent stereo system at home when we were growing up. Of course, little did he expect the "noise" we would play on it (Def Leppard, Aerosmith, and I'm sorry to say the many compilations of the Now That's What I Call Music albums 🙄). But he did like Michael Jackson's music, even if he didn't understand anything else about him.
Which brings me to Questlove's book Music is History. Wholly dedicated to American music history, he does a fine job of adding context and numbers and deeper connections to music and musicians and the times they lived in.
Filled with playlists and interesting notes about musical styles and the trends that made them popular or hastened their demise, this is a great book to have beside you while you discover old songs.
Back to MJ, the chapter on 1982 (best year ever tbh!) made me realise how much MJ was influencing music and making history in the year I was born! Interesting to note that David Bowie's interview about MTV's segregated playlist might have paved the way (or at least lit up the pavement) for Billie Jean and other videos from Thriller.

Next up, a chapter about Prince!

Ok, now I'm getting back to reading and listening.

I'll be talking to the kiddos about the art of edi I'll be talking to the kiddos about the art of editing at Kala Ghoda tomorrow evening. Sniff 🥲 I'm going to need a moment.

Before Trilogy was born, I left my job as desk editor in a newspaper to bring up a puppy and run Literary Angels, an independent editing practice. I began by working with scientists (ornithologists specifically, my favourite people, this is another long story) and gingerly edited their papers, just for grammar (while nudging them to write features so everyone could read them).

I then started working with historians, business coaches, NGOs, and writers working on their first novels.

I still remember the pride I felt when I spent my own hard-earned money on ordering the latest edition of the Chicago Manual of Style. I sat with it for a while, feeling like a proper Editor. The entire collection of reference books we have for writers and editors in the library today, that is all me, I am chuffed to say! (This was also my wildest, unrestrained stationery hoarding phase, highlighters and binder clips, and those yellow pencils). Meethil will tell you that every holiday we ever took coincided with a deadline and that I always prioritised my editing over everything... and he would be right 😕 (he insisted I add the pic of me using Motu as a table to see what he had to put up with. Sorry, not sorry 😬).

As the years went by, I got the honour or working with a few well established, amazing writers, too. To say I was having the time of my life would be an understatement. It has always thrilled me to pick apart sentences, to peek into the working of language and stories and see how they fit, to tinker with words and add punctuation to make the idea flow better. Now, I'm going to try to convey some of this joy to kids!
